After the massive success of Parker Finn’s “Smile,” it was only a matter of time before we got wind of a sequel. Paramount Pictures has now confirmed we’ll be getting “Smile 2” next year. This will be the first film under a multi-year, first-look deal between the studio and Finn.
2022’s “Smile,” centers around a psychiatrist who witnesses a bizarre and traumatic incident with a patient. Afterwards she becomes convinced that she is being stalked and threatened by an uncanny entity.
The first film was also a feature length adaptation of Finn’s own short film a “Laura Hasn’t Slept.” Considering the big screen adaptation raked in $217 million worldwide, it’s assumed he will be writing and directing “Smile 2” as well.
“The audience was screaming at the screen, so it was very clear that the communal environment and nature of it was incredible,” Finn said to The Hollywood Reporter in December. “And to Paramount’s credit, they recognized that, and they got behind the film in such an amazing way.”
And that admiration between the studio and director/writer seems to be mutual. “Smile’s breakthrough success is a testament to Parker’s unique and fresh filmmaking, and we are thrilled that he will make Paramount his home,” Paramount CEO, Brian Robbins said.
“Parker knows how to keep people on the edge of their seat and we’re happy that we get to keep scaring audiences together,” added Paramount’s Michael Ireland and Daria Cercek.
“Smile 2” will take a bite out of theaters October 18th, 2024.
