We finally have a date for when cult filmmaker John Waters will get his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. On Monday, September 18th the iconic Baltimore director will receive the coveted honor. Making him the 2,763rd creator to garner this kind of acknowledgment.
Waters has written and directed sixteen movies including “Female Trouble,” “Polyester,” “Cry Baby,” “Serial Mom,” and “A Dirty Shame.” His films “Pink Flamingos” and “Hairspray” are in the U.S. Library of Congress’ National Film Registry. “Hairspray” is probably his best known film since it was adapted into a Tony award-winning musical, that was adapted into a movie musical in 2007.
He has also authored ten books including “Shock Value,” “Crackpot,” and “Art: A Sex Book” (co-written with Bruce Hainley). Audiobook versions of his titles “Carsick” and “Mr. Know-It-All” have been nominated for Grammy Awards for Best-Spoken Word Album. And his first novel “Liarmouth: A Feel Bad Romance” was optioned by Village Roadshow Pictures for Waters to possibly direct the movie adaptation.
If being a filmmaker and author wasn’t enough, he also has two music compilation CDs released under New Line Records, 2004’s “A John Waters Christmas” and 2007’s “A Date with John Waters.” As well as being one of the faces of a Nike campaign in 2019 and the Saint Laurent fall/winter 2020 menswear campaign. Alongside being featured with longtime collaborator/conspirator Mink Stole in the 2022 Calvin Klein Pride campaign.
“John Waters has been a huge part of pop culture for many years,” said Ana Martinez, Producer of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. “As a director, he has created some of our historic and favorite film moments and we’re thrilled to welcome him to our landmark location for this well-deserved and permanent tribute.”
He was nominated for the star by Outfest, a California-based nonprofit that provides support to LGBTQIA+ artists. The organization also gave him the 16th Outfest Achievement Award in 2012.
Waters will be joined at the ceremony by guest speakers Stole, Ricki Lake, and Greg Gorman. The event starts at 11:30 AM (PT) and will be streamed live exclusively at the Hollywood Walk Of Fame’s website.
