Abbi Jacobson Calls Amazon ‘Cowardly’ for “League of Their Own” Cancellation

Creator of Amazon Prime Video’s “A League of Their Own” Abbi Jacobson has called out the streamer’s excuse for the show’s cancelation. On August 18th, Prime Video reversed their previous decision to give the show a truncated second season. The company blames delays caused by the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.

Looking at the history of the series, it’s no surprise why Jacobson thinks Prime’s reason for cancelation is dubious. In March Amazon canceled the show, but negotiations were pushing for a second season to wrap everything up. In April the company confirmed “A League of Their Own” was renewed for a second and final season. But season two would only run as a four-episode limited series, half the number of episodes that season one received. Basically this looks like a case of the company wanting an out to do what they wanted to do anyway. The strikes were just a good scapegoat to shift the fans blame on to.

“To blame this cancellation on the strike, (which is an essential fight for fair wages, protections and working conditions, etc…) is bullshit and cowardly,” Jacobson said. “But this post isn’t about all that. About all the ways this show has been put through the ringer. Not today. This post here is about the special show I was lucky to make with so many incredibly talented artists and actors and writers and crew. A show I’m so proud of. Filled to the brim with stories worth telling. Full of so much heart and soul and value.”

Jacobson signed off by thanking viewers, as well as her co-stars.

The series is a reinterpretation of the beloved 1992 film “A League of Their Own.” The series follows several women who form their own professional baseball league during World War II. It focused on things like racism in the era, as well as how gay female baseball players had to hide their sexuality for their own safety. The cast includes Jacobson as Carson, D’Arcy Carden as Greta Gill, and Chanté Adams as Max Chapman.

Now that Prime Video has canceled the show once again, viewers are left with a massive cliffhanger of an ending. Some fans are using social media to tag rival streaming platforms like Netflix to see if they will pick up the show. Given Jacobson’s wording, it sounds like contracts prevent her from shopping the series elsewhere. With the recent trend of going scorched earth with “underperforming” shows, this outcome seems unlikely anyway.
