“Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” Musical Episode Coming Next Month

Paramount+’s various “Star Trek” shows continue to boldly go where no show in the franchise has gone before. Perhaps none so much as “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” season 2. Starring Anson Mount as Captain Christopher Pike, the sophomore season will feature two big Federation firsts.

Episode 9 of season 2 is titled “Subspace Rhapsody,” and it’s gonna be a MUSICAL! (Although we will argue a few “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” episodes *could* count. Does the name Vic Fontaine mean nothing to you?!)

“Subspace Rhapsody” will feature 10 original songs, plus a “Subspace Rhapsody” version of the series’ main title, with music and lyrics by Kay Hanley (“Letters to Cleo“) and Tom Polce (“Letters to Cleo,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend“).  A trailer just for the episode was released during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC), and it looks pretty awesome.

The OTHER big first, the “Star Trek: Lower Decks” / “Strange New Worlds” crossover episode we first heard about at SDCC 2022, aired this past weekend. (Again, we argue “Deep Space Nine” had this, too, with several key “The Next Generation” characters making more than cameo appearances.) “Those Old Scientists” actually hit the streaming service the same day as panel.

“Subspace Rhapsody” hits Paramount+ on Thursday, August 3rd.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
