“Barbie,” “Oppenheimer” Sets, Breaks Box Office Records

Both “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” have broken more than one box office record this past weekend. The two films have both have grossed over $80 million in their opening weekend. Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” has made over $194 million (domestic), a new record for a film directed by a woman. Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” has made $80.5 million. Both films have globally netted $356 million and $180 million, marking this the 4th highest-grossing box office weekend of all time.

The “Barbenheimer” hype shows how well unconventional marketing can work. Many theaters across the country offered tickets to both films as a double feature. The darker war film and the fantastic in pink plastic movies are polar opposites, but maybe that is why they work together.

    “Barbie“

Ryan Gosling, Margot Robbie “Barbie” Warner Bros. Pictures

“Barbie” stars Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling as the titular doll by Mattel and her forever beau. The two go on a wacky adventure to the real world, even getting arrested at one point. The film also has several big names in the cast like Simu Liu, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, and more. Even Will Ferrell plays an evil business man in the real world obsessed with a child’s toy. A little weird that this is happening a second time in his career.

    “Oppenheimer“

    Cillian Murphy “Oppenheimer” Universal Studios”

“Oppenheimer” stars Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, and Robert Downey Jr.. The World War II period piece is about the construction of the atom bomb. The widely diverse cast also has Florence Pugh, Josh Peck, and Rami Malek. The film has been well received among film critics, and is clearly a future Oscar nominee.

“Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” are both in theaters worldwide. May the “Barbenheimer” supremacy continue it’s reign.
