Netflix is adding to one of its most popular series, “La Casa de Papel” (aka “Money Heist“), with the prequel series “Berlin.” The original series ran for five seasons from 2017 until 2021. It centered around an unusual group of robbers as they attempt to carry out the most perfect robbery in Spanish history, by stealing €2.4 billion from the Royal Mint of Spain.

The upcoming prequel series will center around the character of Berlin (Pedro Alonso). It will follow him in the years before he took the job robbing the Royal Mint of Spain. Even though the character died in the second season of “Money Heist” he was still in the show through various flashbacks. This series will build upon the story set up in those flashbacks. And tell the story of him attempting to steal $44 million worth of jewels.

All with the help of his team Damián (Tristán Ulloa), a philanthropic professor and a close friend of Berlin. Cameron (Begoña Vargas), a loose cannon who lives life on the edge. Roi (Julio Peña), a locksmith and Berlin’s sidekick. Bruce (Joel Sánchez), who is an expert on gadgets and weaponry. And Keila (Michelle Jenner) an electronics specialist.

“It’s trip through the golden age of the character, when he robbed around Europe crazy in love,” Pina said about “Berlin.” “That’s the most surprising, the comedy. You’re going to make people laugh a lot.”

Creator of “Money Heist” Álex Pina is returning with collaborator Esther Martínez Lobato. Along with returning writer David Oliva and newcomer David Barrocal. Barrocal will also be directing some episodes alongside Geoffrey Cowper and returning director Albert Pintó.

While there is no firm release date is set just yet. Netflix anticipates the eight-episode first season will hit their platform sometime in December of 2023, with the possibility of additional seasons later on.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Berlin” as they become available. You can check out the teaser trailer below:
