Margot Robbie Gives Tour of “Barbie: The Movie” Dream House

As if the “Barbie: The Movie” hype train couldn’t gain any more steam, star Margot Robbie just gave Architectural Digest a tour of the dream house set. Let’s just say we now fully understand how it caused a pink paint shortage.

Robbie gushes over the fun, but admittedly impractical, slide from her bedroom down to her pool. She also revealed the pool has no water, since water, fire, and all other elements don’t exist in Barbie Land. This also means all her showering and teeth brushing are just mimed. Like children would while playing with a real Barbie doll. Even though the pool is made of a solid clear blue substance, people still walk around it like it was real.

The second coolest feature of the home has to be her magical wardrobe. Director Greta Gerwig, production designer Sarah Greenwood, and set designer Katie Spencer tried to top the legendary closet from “Clueless.” Each day Barbie simply opens the clear doors, twirls around, and voila she is magically dressed. Once she is dressed for the day her closet generates and new outfit complete with jewelry and accessories. So she always impeccably dressed.

Once Barbie is dressed she goes down her bedroom slide and across the pool to the kitchen. Her kitchen is a mixture of clearly artificial prop food and straight-up 2-dimensional decals. Once again mimicking a real-life Barbie play kitchen. The oven is also just a decal under a countertop. All of the homes in the neighborhood are also clear, allowing the Barbies to wave at and talk to each other.

Gerwig, Greenwood, and Spencer even give us a behind-the-scenes look at how they designed the whole city. Since the iconic doll came about in 1959 they based the look around 50s soundstage musicals. They tried to duplicate the plastic and artificial feel of the toy while keeping it classically designed and beautiful. And from the looks of it, they knocked that concept out of the park.

At one point, Gerwig talks about all the meetings they have had just about the color pink. Focusing on how to make Barbie Land mostly monochromatic without clashing. Showing a swatch of a pale pink explaining this is what they used instead of the color white. Even the clear element seem to have a pink sheen to them.

“Barbie: The Movie” stars Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, John Cena, Rhea Perlman, Dua Lipa, Issa Rae, Emma Mackey, Alexandra Shipp, Kate McKinnon, and more. It will hit theaters July 21st. You can check out the full video of the house tour below:
