Netflix’s “Bird Box” Sequel Gets a Surprise Teaser Trailer

Netflix’s 2018 film “Bird Box” took the world by storm. Because a social media challenge is the new gauge for hitting critical mass, right? The streaming giant revealed they’ve been secretly working on a second film, “Bird Box Barcelona.”

    “Bird Box” Netflix

Adapted from a Josh Malerman novel of the same name. The first film tells the story of a post-apocalyptic world, inhabited by horrific entities that force anyone who sees them to kill themselves. With the story taking place 5 years after the initial invasion. The 2018 film follows Malorie (Sandra Bullock) as she embarks on a blindfolded journey through the woods, with kids in tow. In a desperate journey to find a safe place. The title “Bird Box” comes from when Malorie puts a bird into, you guessed it, a box. Since in this universe our feathers friends go nuts every time they see one of the horrifying creatures. Giving their blindfolded human companions a heads-up that danger is nearby.

The follow-up “Bird Box Barcelona” is slated for a summer release, but has been largely absent from any lists of upcoming content. While little is known about the plot, it seems that this will be a prequel to the 2018 film. It will follow a new cast of characters, Sebastián, and his daughter, as they navigate the, seemingly first, infestation in Spain.

While films being shot in secret is rare since most want to get the hype train going as soon as possible, it’s not unheard of. Director Adam Green shot the 4th installment of the “Hatchet” horror franchise, “Victor Crowley,” in secret. Netflix has done this before in 2018 with the sci-fi film “The Cloverfield Paradox.” Where they aired a trailer during the Super Bowl only to release the film right after the game ended. At least this time we got a bit more notice.

The new film is co-written and directed by David Pastor and Àlex Pastor, who worked with Netflix previously on “The Occupant.”

“Bird Box Barcelona” will hit Netflix on July 14th, and you can check out the teaser below. We’ll keep you posted on any updates about the project as they become available.
