Tips for Starting a Game Development Company

Have you ever played an overhyped game and thought – “Wow I can create a better game than this!” Or have you ever come up with an idea for a game and wished that it was real?

Well, now it can be real as you might be the perfect person to make a game for everyone that had the same thoughts as you but didn’t do anything about it.

You can start your game development studio and create the games that you’ve always wanted to play.

Here are some tips for starting a game development company:

    1. Decide On A Game Format

If you are thinking of starting a video game company then you probably already have an idea of what game format you want to start in but if you don’t, this can be a tricky choice to make.

Many developing studios will often try to release their game in every format and every app store from Steam to PC CDs and XboX store to a PlayStation digital download.

Trying to do all of it at once, however, can hinder the reputation of your studio pretty quickly as a small team may not be able to handle all of this at the same time.

Try to do some research on where your target audience is and what platform they use the most.

For instance, if you are just starting by releasing a small mobile game before jumping into the gaming arena, try only developing an iOS version first.

    2. Start With A Flagship Game

One of the easiest ways to earn a name in the gaming industry is by creating a flagship product such as a game or franchise. There are many game development companies out there that are known because of the one game that made them famous.

Your flagship product does not even have to be a game, it can also be a technology or a specific concept that you were the first to master.

For example, open-world games are extremely common among many game studios today, but the popularity of the concept can be traced back to specific games that excelled at the execution of the concept to make it a trend.

    3. Create Your Marketing Strategy

Any company is only as good as its marketing strategy and its ability to reel in a new customers. No matter how great your product is, if your marketing cannot convey its value then no one is going to care for it.

The gaming industry is quite a fun place to create marketing assets as people can rave about graphics and stories for ages in the comments sections getting you the social media impressions you want.

Many gaming studios have been known to tease games for years before their launch and trick people into thinking their beloved new game is finally coming only to release a remastered old version or even a DLC.

See what works best for your product and try to make something fun out of the concept instead of focusing on hard marketing as that may not always work with the target demographic group.

    4. Assemble A Killer Team

Any successful business needs a dedicated and creative team. This is no different for a game development company trying to enter the market.

Not only do you need top-tier talent that believes in your vision but also someone who is looking to grow your business as well as their coding skills.

Once you find great people for your project, make sure that you are fulfilling their career development needs. A lack of growth opportunities is a commonly cited reason for leaving a job in gaming and other industries.

Try to invest in a BSB training package that covers all team functions and focuses on invaluable leadership skills.

    Conclusion

Lastly, starting any kind of business requires true passion as the life of an entrepreneur is not easy.

Try your best to not get discouraged when it gets hard and make all your video game dreams come true!
