Gaming is all about experience. Gamers enjoy playing games online and offline and thus game designing and development has become a rewarding career with endless opportunities for those with strong technical skills. Game developers need an idea and skills to convert the idea into a video game. If you are looking for a career in game development, you need to break into the gaming industry with the right set of skills for this job.

Roles and Responsibilities Of A Game Developer

A game is basically a code with visual elements and uniquely programmed features that have been tested numerous times. To become a successful game developer, you need to have strong arithmetic skills and creativity. But that’s not all. Game developing includes various steps to work on such as the game’s interface, working, ability to engage gamers, animation, character designing, audio generation, localization, programming, testing and editing to name a few. A game developer has to perform the following tasks:

    ·   Search for new ideas for a game

    ·   Perform coding using technical skills to generate game code

    ·   Enhance the game design by prototyping and reiterating

    ·   Testing a game design across platforms

    ·   Porting games among systems

    ·   Animate characters and audio visual elements in the game

    ·   Remove issues and fix bugs that occur during testing sessions

As a game developer, you can develop games for a game publisher such as Activision Blizzard, a single platform or develop exclusively for a console. As an aspiring game developer, you need to decide whether you want to work for a publisher or publish your own games.

    Specializations for A Game Developer

Depending upon your choice of the type of game developer you want to become, you need to develop niche skills that you will need. There are opportunities available for game development in artificial intelligence (AI), Esports, augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR) in the Metaverse.

Having a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field are a preferable choice for publishing companies. A degree or IT program  in game design, animation, interactive media, art or graphic design can also be beneficial. Dedicated degree and diploma courses in gaming such as Computer Games Programming, Games Technology, Computer Games (development or design) and Software Engineering are also provided by certain universities.

    Build a Game Developer Portfolio

As you acquire a related degree and the basic skill set required for a game developer, start creating your own games. You can start with very basic codes and then graduate towards more complex programming. If you get a chance to get a hands on experience at professional gaming, go for it as this will add to your portfolio. Contact large game studios and show them your designs.

    Look for Potential Employers

Some hirers keep posting vacancies for budding game developers on various platforms. You can post your portfolio and availability on these platforms to catch their attention. Include screenshots of the games scenes that you have designed and links for the game software installation to your game developer portfolio to let a potential employer assess games designed by you. Look for game industry events happening in your city and nearby where you can find potential employers hiring for game development studios and meet other developers as well to expand your connections.

    Entry-Level Gaming Careers for Aspirants

At the beginning of your career, you may also try to get entry into the industry through other related entry level gaming careers. Some of them are:

    ·   Animators – With a course in animation, you can become a professional animator who uses specialized software to design interesting game characters, props and other objects.

    ·   Game artists – These professionals perform the role of creating 2D and 3D images used within a game.

    ·   Audio engineers – They edit and mix the soundtracks to be used in games including the background music, sound effects and voice-overs.

    ·   Video game designers – They perform the crucial task of conceptualizing game characters, gameplay and storyline. They have to work with developers and game programmers during the coding process.

    ·   Game writers – The in-game scripts and dialogs used during a game are written by these professionals. They also write the marketing materials and documentation for a game.

    ·   Game testers – They are professionals who identify bugs and other issues in a game.

Becoming a game developer may be a time taking process but it is an interesting and rewarding career stream. So start developing your technical and soft skills today to take the first step towards it.
