Kevin Williamson Won’t Return to Write or Direct “Scream 8”

Scream franchise creator Kevin Williamson hadn’t sat in the director’s chair in over 25 years before helming Scream 7. Williamson now says he will not be returning to write or direct Scream 8. Assuming that one is even greenlit, because nothing is definitive on that at this time.

The filmmaker recently did an interview with Hello Sidney where he discussed his future with the franchise. (Please note; the full interview linked contains massive spoilers for Scream 7. The excerpts below will be spoiler free).

When asked if Scream 7 made him want to direct more, Williamson responded, “Not Scream, no.”

“It’s nice to be part of the Scream family,” he adds. “That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct. Other people can take the reins.”

This was all said after clarifying that he really returned because Neve Campbell did. “It came out of Neve returning. She asked, and I came running.” So, it does seem like Williamson may just be done with the franchise, but maybe just for the time being. Scream franchise regulars are a lot like its killers; they just keep coming back.

“I want to direct another film that I had written that is just waiting for me to find the time to direct. And right now, I’m working on a couple TV shows that I’m really excited about. So maybe I’ll direct one of those — who knows? For the next Scream, I’ll probably step back and just be a part of the family again.”

    What Scream 8 May Hold?

“I don’t know,” he said when asked what the next installment of the franchise may look like.  “Whoever does it will have to let us know. I have some ideas of where it could go, but I’m anxious to see what another storyteller could do with it. I hope that we get the chance to do it. It’s nice to be part of the Scream family. That doesn’t mean I always have to be front and center. I don’t always have to write or direct. Other people can take the reins. I’m excited to see what other storytellers come up with.”

However there is no word on Paramount developing a new film, yet. “I’m hopeful there will be an 8. No one’s really talking about it yet. We just assume, with the box office, we hope there will be one. But no one’s talking.”

Scream 7 stars Campbell, Isabel May, and Anna Camp. It centers around Sidney (Campbell) trying to protect her daughter (May) when Ghostface resurfaces.

It is currently playing in theaters nationwide. You can check out a trailer below:
