Matthew McConaughey Says Woody Harrelson is Related to Him

It’s no secret Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are BFFs. The duo announced in March that they would be working together on a new Apple TV+ comedy from David West Read. The 10-episode series will have them playing fictionalized versions of themselves, while them and their families live on a ranch. McConaughey revealed on the Kelly Ripa “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast the show is called “Brother From Another Mother.” In that same interview, he also revealed the title might be a bit more on the nose than they initially thought.

Apparently, McConaughey believes Harrelson may actually be related to him. He points to uncanny resemblances between the two; physically, and in their personalities. “You know, where I start and where he ends, and where he starts and I end, has always been like a murky line,” McConaughey said. “And that’s part of our bromance, right? My kids call him Uncle Woody. His kids call me Uncle Matthew. And you see pictures of us and my family thinks a lot of pictures of him are me. His family thinks a lot of pictures of me are him.”

But his biggest piece of evidence comes from a recent revelation from his own mother. “In Greece a few years ago, we’re sitting around talking about how close we are and our families,” McConaughey revealed. “And my mom is there, and she says, ‘Woody, I knew your dad.’ Everyone was aware of the ellipses that my mom left after ‘knew.’ It was a loaded K-N-E-W.”

Yup, McConaughey’s mom may have known Harrelson’s dad in the biblical sense.

This revelation led McConaughey to dig deeper into his family history. “We went on to unpack what this ‘knew’ meant and did some math and found out that [Harrelson’s] dad was on furlough at the same time that my mom and dad were in their second divorce,” he continued. “Then there’s possible receipts and places out in West Texas where there might have been a gathering, or a meeting, or a knew’ moment.”

Neither of the “True Detective” stars has taken a DNA test to prove definitively one way or the other. YET. “Look, it’s a little easier for Woody to say, ‘Come on, let’s do [DNA tests],’ because what’s the skin in it for him?” McConaughey points out. “It’s a little harder for me because he’s asking me to take a chance to go, ‘Wait a minute, you’re trying to tell me my dad may not be my dad after 53 years of believing that?’ I got a little more skin in the game.”

There is no word of if this element will play into “Brother From Another Mother.” Currently, there is no release date set for the new series. But we’ll keep you posted on updates about the show and this possible half-brother situation as they develop.
