Jamie Lee Curtis Wants to Play Dr. Kureha in “One Piece”

Oscar winner Jamie Lee Curtis is no stranger to video games and anime. Here intense love for it comes up often. One of her all-time favorites is “One Piece,” the popular manga by Eiichiro Oda. Curtis isn’t shy about recommending it to everyone. And, as it turns out, she REALLY wants to play Dr. Kureha in Netflix’s upcoming live-action “One Piece” series.

It isn’t the first time she’s posted about it, but she’s throwing out the suggestion again, this time with the hashtag #CurtisforKureha.

    Dr. Kureha, “One Piece”

For those unfamiliar with “One Piece“, Dr. Kureha is the acting physician of Drum Island. A heavy drinker with a harsh temperament who doesn’t suffer fools. Unless you want to listen to her secret for long life and looks. Sporting hip-hugger pants, a cropped top and jacket, and a navel ring, she’s clearly proud of her physique. Her age leads many to believe she’s a witch. Apparently, she’s the oldest human in the “One Piece” universe at 139. More importantly, Kureha’s assistant is Tony Tony Chopper (Chopper for short). A reindeer that ate the human-human fruit, and obtained human speech and physical attributes. Chopper eventually joins the Straw Hat crew as the ship’s doctor.

Jamie Lee Curtis, “Knives Out” Lionsgate

Honestly, newly minted Oscar winner Curtis isn’t a bad fit. She has an intense enthusiasm for the character. But given how well live-action adaptations of anime has gone for Netflix, it’s not altogether certain whether the series will even reach the Drum Island arc. There’s a reason that manga is adapted into an animated medium. But if it does become a success, we’ll welcome Curtis with open arms.

“One Piece” is due out on Netflix sometime later this year. We’ll next see Curtis in “The Haunted Mansion” July 28th on Disney+, and Eli Roth‘s “Borderlands” movie eventually.
