“Machete” is a bit of an anomaly. After the iconic character played by Danny Trejo made an appearance in “Spy Kids,” people wanted more. Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has tried to satisfy fans over the years after the fake trailer in “Grindhouse,” his joint double-feature film with Quentin Tarantino. But clamor for a real movie was so strong, Rodriguez gave in. While the first film saw some success, the sequel was a commercial flop. So will there be another one? Possibly the fake “Machete Kills in Space” trailer teased in the sequel “Machete Kills?” The short answer is mmmaaaaybe?
“I put a fake trailer for that [‘Machete in Space’] on ‘Machete 2’ to kind of satisfy, this is pretty much what it would look like, but you can see it in two minutes rather than two hours. And it never satisfies them, so we have to do it,” Rodriguez said at SXSW. “But you know, the original was just a fake trailer on ‘Grindhouse’. [Fans] would bug us for years, ‘When’s that movie coming out?’ I said, ‘It was a fake trailer.’ ‘No, but it looked real! When is it coming out?’ So we got to make it for them. It wasn’t meant to be a film, the audience just wanted it. So we have to give it to them. When someone wants something that bad, we never had that with any movie before. Now everyone’s still ‘Machete in Space!’ You can’t give ’em enough.”
Rodriguez has his hands full at present. He’s currently doing press for his film “Hypnotic” starring Ben Affleck. After that, he’s continuing work on “Spy Kids: Armageddon” and “We Could Be Heroes 2.” So even if there’s the possibility of a third “Machete” film, it might not be as soon as fans would like. Furthermore, the abysmal success of the sequel film would also be a stumbling block, as it’ll be hard to finance a project with a sequel of such poor success. So will there be a “Machete Kills in Space?” Perhaps, but it might be on the backburner for a while.
