Eight years ago, the saga of Percy Jackson was closed in “The Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus.” A collective fanbase both adored and mourned the end of the series about their favorite, plucky demi-gods. But you can’t keep a good series down. Author Rick Riordan has announced a return to the adventures of Percy, Annabeth, and Grover in a new novel.
Titled “Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the Gods,” it started as a means of whetting the appetites of Disney+ for supporting a reboot. Unnecessary, as it turned out. But Disney, in turn, wished for something to support the show. Turns out Riordan had a couple ideas he’d been sitting on. This will be the first truly Percy-centric story since “The Last Olympian.” Something fans have been wanting for years.
Percy and his friends must assist Ganymede, Zeus’s cupbearer, in retrieving the missing Chalice, a magical artifact capable of granting immortality to those who drink from it. That’s….sort of all we know about the plot so far.

A Day in the Life of a Demigod
Riordan is lovingly calling it “Percy Jackson and the Olympians Book Six.” Currently a standalone title, there’s the possibility of future books depending on the reception of this one. Riordan explains this is “just a day in the life of a demigod.” The tone for the novel will stay the same middle grade accessibility as the others, welcoming readers of all ages. “I have readers from eight years old to 80, and everybody’s welcome,” Riordan says. Just as welcome to the author himself, comparing his return to Percy’s world as “like putting on your most comfortable pair of jeans.”
Needless to say, we’re delighted. But it’s not the only content to come from Riordan related to Percy Jackson.
A Star Collaboration
May 2023 will see the release of “The Sun and the Star,” a first-time collaboration between Riordan and Mark Oshiro, author of “Anger is a Gift” and “Each of Us a Desert.” The novel they’re co-creating will focus on Nico di Angelo, son of Hades, and his boyfriend and son of Apollo, Will Solace. They’ll travel the Underworld in order to safe an old friend. Riordan is very excited to work with Mark and claims this will be very different in terms of subject matter.

“This is really the first time I ever sat down and co-wrote a book with anyone, and Mark was just fabulous. They’re an incredible writer and brought so much to this that I wouldn’t have thought of or approached in quite the same way,” Riordan said. Sound like a match made in heaven! Or would that be Olympus? Make sure to put that on your reading list for Spring!

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” tv series
Meanwhile, Disney+’s “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series continues production, with an optimistic release date for sometime in 2024. Riordan has nothing but glowing things to say of the project. “This is a big show…no one has really done anything like this before on a number of levels.” We’ll be very excited to see the outcome of these efforts. In the meantime, fan appetites can be sated by the release of two very different, but very exciting new books of their favorite godlings next year.
Percy Jackson and the Chalice of the God is set for a September 2023 release. We’ll let you know when pre-orders officially open. We’ll let you know what we hear about a possible “Percy Jackson” series release date.
