How to Use Technology in Your Foreign Language Classroom

Learning a foreign language is expanding your vocabulary. Teaching French, German, Italian, or Spanish to an English-speaking classroom can be even trickier. You have to take different character profiles and knowledge levels into consideration and help everyone learn effectively.

Technology has made this task somewhat easier by introducing a plethora of tools and apps for teachers to take advantage of. Let’s take a look at why you should use these tools in your classroom and how you can help your students learn foreign languages easily.

Value of Using Technology to Teach Foreign Languages

Why should you use technology to teach foreign languages instead of relying on tried and tested methods, books, and writing exercises? Using technology doesn’t dispute the value of traditional learning methods. Instead, you can use technology to augment how you already teach your students foreign languages.

Students can use technology to look up foreign terms quickly during classes or conduct personal research at home based on their digital notes. Students have also been known to change the world through technological innovation by being inspired through existing tools, platforms, and apps. Technology doesn’t in any way impede or slow down learning – it makes it more efficient, engaging, and up-to-date with modern students’ standards.

Make Use of Online Platforms to Encourage Autonomous Learning

The most straightforward way in which you can use technology to teach foreign languages is by implementing online learning platforms into your curriculum. Students can use these platforms in class, at home, or whenever they have a few minutes to spare and learn a language. Some of the best platforms you should check out for your classroom are:

    • FluentU
    • Duolingo
    • Babbel
    • Rosetta Stone
    • Lirica

The value of using these tools to teach foreign languages extends not only to classroom teaching, but also to musical, speaking, and writing exercises. Check them out together with your students, teach them how to use them, and refer to them for homework and classroom exercises.

Teach Students to Use Dictionary and Translation Apps Independently

Translation lies at the center of language learning, and technology can make the process that much easier. Luckily, students carry their smartphones and laptops with them and have access to a wide range of digital tools to use. Students can use the best human translation service to get their homework or essays translated and checked for mistakes when they want an expert’s opinion.

Moreover, platforms such as Google Translate, Microsoft Translator, and Text Grabber can help students tremendously during the learning process. This type of technologically assisted learning wasn’t possible before, and you should make sure that your students know what possibilities lie in their hands.

Encourage Students to Use Writing Apps for Notes During Classes

Instead of using notebooks and pens to take notes during class, students can use tablet and laptop devices instead. The benefit of using writing apps is that students can write down notes faster, check their grammar, and follow along with your lecture more attentively. There is a wide range of apps students can use, including Grammarly, Evernote, and Hemingway Editor depending on which languages you are teaching.

They can also use Google Workplace to manage homework, create presentations, and otherwise organize their learning experience more effectively. By transforming your classroom into a digital environment, you will be able to send them projects more easily, evaluate them, and cover more ground quickly.

Create Interactive Discussion Classes with Foreign Language Media

Lastly, there is a wide range of foreign language media such as movies, TV, music, and documentaries for you to use for teaching. Each of these can become centerstage in your foreign language lessons and serve as an interactive classroom exercise.

Students can use the foreign language you are teaching to discuss the movie or documentary you just watched. You can evaluate their speaking skills, encourage them to open up to one another, and watch or listen to an interesting piece of media. These types of classrooms are the amalgamation of the previous points we’ve covered, and students can use writing apps and translation platforms to learn.

Adopting Modern Technology in Language Learning

The role of technology in foreign language learning is only bound to expand as time goes by. In tandem with existing language books, technology can make the learning process much more effective and engaging for everyone. Introduce these and other digital tools to your classroom today and prepare your students for the language learning trends of tomorrow.
