During the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the Uzbekistan rhythmic gymnastics team put on a performance any “Sailor Moon” fan is unlikely to forget. During these games, there have been other callouts to anime featuring “Naruto” and “Attack on Titan,” but this one really takes the cake.
In the performance, you can see the team doing a traditional five ball act. Difficult to do on its own but they made it even better by choreographing to the iconic music from “Sailor Moon” Moonlight Densetsu.
In a routine completely inspired by Japanese culture, you can see the team walk out with beautiful costumes like the first transformation of Usagi Tsukino. They have everything- from the back bows to the brooches. The only thing they didn’t do was the iconic hairstyle, but that’s understandable. I’m sure they didn’t want to trip on their tails like Usagi is so notoriously known for in the show.
If you haven’t seen it yet, watch the video. This is from the pre-Olympics Championship which is the same routine they performed in the Olympics
And this video here is their Olympic performance. Unfortunately it’s not embeddable but if you click the link and forward to 18 minutes in you’ll see their performance.
This is going to go down in history along with figure skater Evgenia Medvedeva with her very own “Sailor Moon” ice skating show, and Lizzo, who also likes to show off her love of Sailor Moon.
