Spot the robot dog has gotten to go out for some very cool walks lately. He’s been seen in places like Fort Pierce, Florida and the East River in New York City. Videos are popping up all over the place of people walking Spot. And it’s not everyday you see a robot dog just walking down the sidewalk.
There’s even a video of a dog pondering what Spot is.
What we’re thinking is that it’s part of their advertising as they are now selling customized spots to people who want them. Otherwise these are people with A LOT of expendable cash just walking their new toy. These robots are able to do tasks and can be programmed for specific uses. They navigate terrain with ease and can be used for collecting data in places that people regularly can’t get to.
Boston Dynamics has described Spot as a nimble robot that climbs stairs and traverses rough terrain with unprecedented ease, yet is small enough to use indoors. Built to be a rugged and customizable platform, Spot autonomously accomplishes your industrial sensing and remote operation needs.
The robot dogs are going for about $75,000. If you consider this as a pet that won’t die then it’s a pretty good investment. In the video above the dog’s name is Scrappy. Scrappy has his own YouTube channel where you can watch him go on adventures with his owner.
It may be a novelty now, but considering that other things like phones were once considered a novelty this may be a peek into the future. One where everyone get’s their own robot companion. I’d be more apt to get a robot dog than a robot humanoid anyway.
