It sounds like a joke but it’s not. More than 150 people in Rhode Island were accidentally mailed tax refund checks that were signed by Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney. There were around 176 misprinted signatures according to CNN.
They are saying that the error occurred due to a technical glitch in the printing system. Mickey Mouse and Walt Disney are the names that are printed on dummy checks for internal testing. Jade Borgeson who is the chief of staff for Rhode Island’s Department of Revenue told CNN that they accidentally printed the test images on the checks.
The names that should have been on the checks were Rhode Island’s state treasurer Seth Magaziner and state controller Peter Keenan. In a photo from WJAR you can see that Mickey Mouse was in the General Treasurer’s signature spot and Walt Disney was in the state controller’s.
While things like this sometimes do happen, it doesn’t make it any less funny that these checks which were mostly issued to businesses were signed by the house of mouse. The checks were being issued for business related things like sales tax, corporate refunds and tax credit refunds.
They are going to be sending out replacement checks in the next week. But in the meantime, check out that picture again from WJAR and have a good laugh.
