Hanbei the Undying is an interesting NPC in the world of Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. As an unkillable NPC, Hanbei offers combat training and tips to Sekiro for his quest. Hanbei can take an absurb amount of punishment and come back the same as he was before. But how exactly did a single warrior end up this way? Thanks to a new manga spin-off starting on May 27, we may soon get an answer.

    Hanbei does look pretty rough

Sekiro Side Story: Hanbei the Undying will explore the bloody history of this cursed warrior. As a tutorial character, there is a lot of room for the manga to really provide background to this mysterious warrior. It will also add some exploration into the world of Sekiro itself. The spin-off will appear on Comic Walker’s website on May 27 and is being licensed by U.S. Publisher Yen Press. The manga is the result of a partnership between From Software and manga artist Shin Yamamoto. Yamamoto previously handled the art for Monster Hunter: Flash Hunter, so this video game to manga adaptation is something he has experience with.

A snippet of the manga released by Yen Press

Yen Press released a story teaser for the manga, saying:

“The Sengoku Era…A time when losing a battle meant losing it all.The Sword Saint, Isshin Ashina, aims for world domination… That is, until he encounters a certain Samurai…”

They later added to their statement on Twitter, by saying:

“In a world of utter turmoil where allies, foes, and corrupted immortals all have their shadows, it’s up to one to restore balance to all.”

There is a lot to look forward to with this mysterious manga. Not only will there be a chance to see into the history of an NPC, but a chance to learn more about the world of Sekiro as well. As a world that keeps its secrets close, there will likely be many fans eager for the chance to get at least a little more information on this beautiful but brutal world.
