How Making Your Own Lightsaber at Disney’s ‘Star Wars’ Land Will Work

If you are a fan of the Star Wars franchise, you’ve thought about what it would be like to wield your own lightsaber at least once. Disney’s Star Wars Land intends to make that dream a reality. Visitors will have the option to create and wield their own lightsabers. A VIP-only presentation from the Disney Parks team was held at this year’s Star Wars Celebration in Chicago. Thanks to it, fans everywhere now have a better idea how the process of constructing your own lightsaber will work.

    Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge

Two lightsaber shops will be available at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge when it opens at Disneyland. The first, Dok-Ondar’s Den of Antiquities, will sell a series of 10 legacy lightsabers based on blades wielded by Star Wars’ characters. The legacy blades will include both of Luke Skywalker’s lightsabers, as well as the blades wielded by Darth Maul, Mace Windu, Darth Vader and Ahsoka Tano. Each blade will come in its own satin-lined presentation case with a unique chevron on the outside. Some of these blades will include unique accessories to make them more accurate. For instance, Kylo Ren’s will come with two additional blades to accommodate its crossguard.

There are so many choices in the Star Wars universe

The second shop, Savi’s Workshop, will allow fans to create their own lightsabers using a collection of parts. Builds will occur as part of an intimate, small-group experience. Guests will begin by choosing from one of four types of lightsaber kits. The options are a Jedi-focused Peace and Justice kit, a Sith-focused Power and Control kit, an Elemental Nature kit, or a Protection and Defense kit. Once a selection has been made, guests will then enter the “build chamber.” Cast members called Guardians will arrive and offer each guest a a choice of three kyber crystals of varying colors.

Each crystal is entirely random. Guests will know the color of their crystal, but not the cut or type until they open the package. Crystals will be inserted into a holocron after selection, allowing iconic characters to whisper the mysteries of the Force to you. Each crystal will contain new and unusual lore from the Star Wars universe. After the crystal selection, Guardians will assist guests as they customize their blade using a discrete set of parts.

    A kyber crystal

Both legacy and custom lightsabers are compatible with a universal blade system. Blades come in different lengths and sizes. They also light up in different colors depending on which hilt they are accompanied with. Each lightsaber runs on AA or AAA batteries and is created using high-quality materials that give it some substantial weight. Fans can purchase a multitude of accessories to add to their lightsaber. Belt clips,full-length padded carrying cases, and holocrons will all be available to purchase. The holocrons will allow fans to “commune with the Force” and learn about their kyber crystal at home.

Pricing for the lightsabers is unavailable at this time. Both shops will be available when Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge opens on May 31. Similar shops will open at Disney World on August 29. For those who have always dreamed of wielding your own custom lightsaber, the future is here and it is as bright as kyber crystal.
