“Avengers: Endgame” May Set Opening Box Office Record

Avengers: Endgame is coming next month and it looks like the movie may  set a record for opening weekend box office. Endgame is due to open in China on April 24 and then domestically on April 26, so the China box office will be included for the movie’s opening.

The current box office opening record is held by Avengers: Infinity War with $640.4 million dollars; however, that did not include China. Other worldwide records set by Infinity War were the fastest movie to gross $1 billion and $1.5 billion (previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens), and the highest grossing movie of 2018 at $2.048 billion.

With China included in the opening weekend box office, estimates are that Endgame will gross $800 million or more. It certainly seems likely that Endgame will be the fifth movie to join the $2 billion club alongside Infinity War, Titanic, The Force Awakens and Avatar. Who knows if it could finally exceed Avatar’s huge $2.7 billion and take the top slot of the highest grossing film? Interest in Endgame is high following the devastation of Infinity War. Just its latest trailer got 268 million views within its first 24 hours. Although if Endgame’s run time is over 3 hours that could impact the number of showings of the film. At Box Office Mojo on the list of highest grossing films, the previous Avengers films sit at #4 (Infinity War), #6 (Avengers), and #8 (Age of Ultron) followed by MCU filmsBlack Panther (#9), Iron Man 3 (#17), and Captain America: Civil War (#19). Aquaman puts the DCEU on the map at #20. Captain Marvel currently sits at #47.

Whether it breaks the record or not, I am sure fans will come out in droves to see Endgame as the culmination of the Thanos saga in the MCU. They may just have to do “whatever it takes” to score opening weekend tickets.

I am still waiting for that blue police box to take me on a star trek to a galaxy far, far away. Until then I will have to content myself with fantasy and sci-fi adventures from books, movies, and TV shows.
