There appears to have been a lack of self awareness when “A Man Called Otto” producer Tom Hanks allowed himself to star in the film. The film is based on “A Man Called Ove” which is a Swedish novel that has already been adapted to the big screen once. The previous adaptation was actually nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. While we haven’t seen the previous celluloid interpretation, we can certainly say this about the American version: Tom Hanks is (seemingly) too nice offscreen to make this role work. “A Man…
“The Pale Blue Eye” is a middling tale of the woes of a fictitious Edgar Allan Poe. Scott Cooper brings the 2003 novel of the same name by Louis Bayard to the big (and streaming) screen. Harry Melling stars as the fictitious version of Poe, who is enrolled at West Point. Who would’ve thought that of the “Harry Potter” actors, Melling would be in the most prestigious projects (including “Queen’s Gambit”). Christian Bale plays Augustus Landor, a former military man turned detective. The film sits in a middling place between occult obsessed and crime caper. Willing to commit to neither,…
The latest film from Cartoon Saloon is “My Father’s Dragon” and we had the chance to chat with director Nora Twomey and star Jacob Tremblay. It’s based on the Newbery-honored children’s book from Ruth Stiles Gannett and follows Elmer (Tremblay) as he struggles to cope with a move to the city and a massive change in circumstances. Along the way he crosses paths with Boris (Gaten Matarazzo) , a young dragon seeking his own place in the world. [Interviews have been edited for clarity.] DHK: I am going to dive right in. Logistically, what do you think was the most…
We had the chance to chat with two legends, “Wendell & Wild” director Henry Selick and actor James Hong. Selick is a titan of stop-motion, having directed “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “James and the Giant Peach,” and “Coraline.” His latest endeavor has him collaborating with Jordan Peele and is based on an original story by Selick. Meanwhile Hong voices Father Bests, the headmaster of a local school. If you don’t visually recognize Hong you certainly know his voice. He has over 650 credits to his name and has 5 projects this year alone (including “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and…
Head into a world of Japanese gods and monsters with Dice Tsutsumi and “Oni: Thunder God’s Tale.” The new animated series from Tonko House and Netflix is a gorgeous story of family and belonging. It follows Momona Tamada as Onari, raised by her father Naru-don (voiced by Craig Robinson) in their mountain village. Onari must find her place as the threat of the mysterious and ominous Oni circles in on her home. The series balances wonderful humor and high stakes, and is paired with a gorgeous and tactile visual style. We chatted with the director about animism in Japanese mythology,…

It’s not a nightmare, it’s a dream: Henry Selick has teamed up with Jordan Peele for “Wendell & Wild” and the trailer is out now. Selick is best known for directing “The Nightmare Before Christmas,” “James and the Giant Peach,” and “Coraline.” Peele you know from “Get Out,” “Us,” and “Nope” and of course as half of the duo Key and Peele. The marriage of their two styles in a stop motion medium is a match made in heaven (or hell for the danged – more on that later). “Wendell & Wild” is an animated tale about scheming demon brothers…

We’re going to start out by saying “She-Hulk: Attorney at Law” is a different type of beast in the MCU. The show is very much a half hour comedy, which feels like quite the departure from much of the usual angsty fare. There are some spiritual siblings in things like Taika Waititi’s versions of Thor, or even the most recent “Ms. Marvel.” However the stakes in those still feel very “world is at risk.” But for Jennifer Walters, aka She-Hulk, cousin to Bruce Banner, things are somewhat more contained (at least for the 4 episode preview reviewers were given). Tatiana…
