An Update on “Galaxy Quest” Revival from Sigourney Weaver

What would you say if a possible “Galaxy Quest” continuation was still possible? Yes, we’re often times the first to be against any kind of revival, reboot, or revisit of a beloved piece of cinema, but- we’re still really hoping this one happens.

Iconic in its parody of “Star Trek” and other space-farring series before it, director Dean Parisot certainly tapped into something enduring and charming with “Galaxy Quest.”

Kind of hard to believe it’s been 22 years since the brilliant film, starring Tim Allen, Alan Rickman, Sigourney Weaver, Tony Schalub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, and Enrico Colantoni blasted into theaters.

Perhaps you’ll recall a time a few years ago that Amazon Prime Video was actively developing a possible continuation tv series with the original cast. But then tragedy struck, and we lost the late great Alan Rickman. The project was shelved, obviously.

BUT- rumors persisted that a “Galaxy Quest” something was still on the table, alongside a bowl of Dr. Lazarus’s Kep-mok blood ticks.

Cut to this recent interview Collider did with Sigourney Weaver, where she gives a little bit of an update on the status of the possible project:

“They were in the middle of reviving it. First of all, there was another script. There was a sequel written by our writer, Bob Gordon. The movie was so witty, and when they released it, DreamWorks cut a lot of the wittiest scenes because they wanted to put it out as a children’s movie at Christmas. I think that was disappointing for everybody, so he decided not to let them have the second one.

However, it was about four years ago, Bob and (producer) Mark Johnson and the whole group, started to develop a series. We lost the wonderful Alan [Rickman] unexpectedly, so that was put in mothballs, but I think they are finally now reviving it.”

Sooooo maybe, just maybe, the NSEA-Protector will fly again?

Also, if you haven’t watched the fabulous “Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary,” you absolutely should. It’s available via Amazon here.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
