Gearboxes incredibly popular shooter game Borderlands is set to get a movie. And the person at the helm of it all is Eli Roth. Eli Roth has been known to direct some scary movies. Hostel, Cabin Fever, The Green Inferno are all movies that he’s done and if this movie is anything like those we have a pretty big hit on our hands. Not to mention Inglorious Basterds which was an amazing movie.

Lionsgate announced Thursday that Roth would be joining producers Avi and Ari Arad. Executive producing will be Randy Pitchford and Straus Zelnick. Overseeing development is Erik Feig and Craig Mazin is writing up the current draft of the screenplay.

“I’m so excited to dive into the world of Borderlands and I could not be doing it with a better script, producing team, and studio. I have a long, successful history with Lionsgate – I feel like we have grown up together and that everything in my directing career has led to a project of this scale and ambition,” Roth said in a statement.

“I look forward to bringing my own energy, ideas, and vision to the wild, fun, and endlessly creative world of the game. Randy Pitchford and everyone at Gearbox have been incredibly supportive of my ideas – it really feels like a perfect storm of creators coming together. We are out to make a new classic, one which the fans of the game will love, but also one which will find new audiences globally.”

Borderlands is an open world shooter where you travel to the planet Pandora. You follow the story of four “Vault Hunters” who are searching for an alien vault. The mission is to find advanced alien technology and bring it back but they end up finding themselves in an impossible situation. They end up having to battle wildlife and stop the head of the corporation who also wants to find the alien tech.

The story of the game is enough to warrant a good movie, and it would be good for those that have not played the game to have some kind of reference to the franchise. There is no release date yet on the film, but we should start to hear casting soon. Stay Tuned!
