A24 and Peacock have just released the first trailer for the upcoming Friday the 13th prequel series, Crystal Lake. Despite being a decades-old IP with 12 movies, another TV series, and several video games, Jason’s backstory is still a bit… fuzzy. And this upcoming series is teasing some serious answers.

The Crystal Lake Trailer
The trailer begins in the summer of 1971. We see a young Pamela Voorhees (Linda Cardellini) working as a cook at the titular camp. But it isn’t long before we see her young, sickly son Jason (Callum Vinson) drown in the camp’s lake. Now, this is a scene and origin story that even the most casual Friday the 13th fans know. Pam went nuts after her only son drowned while two counselors were having sex. This sent her on a killing spree, shown in the first film in the franchise, released in 1980.
After that, Jason took over as the franchise’s signature slasher. The issue is, Jason was a dead child in a lake. How did he resurrect as a seemingly unstoppable killing machine in the body of a human? A mother’s endless capacity for love doesn’t explain his resurrection, let alone him constantly regenerating throughout the franchise.
This is where Crystal Lake is supposed to come in. Once Jason has allegedly drowned to death, Pam becomes obsessed with the idea that he is still out there. What looks like a mother dealing with an unimaginable loss soon takes a turn though. Things go from bad to worse when two people start digging into her past. They uncover a disturbing chain of events that leaves the townspeople wondering who she actually is.

“What do you think the good people of Crystal Lake would say if they knew what you and Jason really were?” a character says to Pam in the trailer. Heavily implying we are going to finally get some answers as to how Jason is seemingly a carnage-fueled Energizer Bunny.
Cardellini and Vinson will co-star alongside William Catlett, Devin Kessler, Cameron Scoggins, Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone, Joy Suprano, Danielle Kotch, and Phoenix Parnevik.
Crystal Lake is directed by Derry Girls’s Michael Lennox, The Pitt’s Quyen Tran, and Caddo Lake’s Celine Held and Logan George. Brad Caleb Kane (IT: Welcome to Derry) will showrun for the series. Kane, Marc Toberoff, Victor Miller, Robert M. Barsamian, Robert P. Barsamian, Stuart Manashil, Tyson Bidner, Michael Lennox, and Roy Lee executive produce.
All 8-episodes of Crystal Lake hit Peacock on October 15th. You can check out the new trailer below:
