Semaglutide medications like Ozempic and Wegovy are usually discussed in connection with diabetes and weight loss. However, new research suggests semaglutide may have another unexpected benefit. It could potentially affect mental health, particularly among people living with bipolar disorder.

That immediately caught my attention because I have recent personal experience with semaglutide. I had been on the medication for years until it made me extremely sick. I had to stop taking it because the physical side effects became too much. This led to me being bedridden, in pain, and having gallbladder issues. They couldn’t figure it out when I went to the emergency room 2x. But finally it clicked: I was going to the ER about 12-24 hours after my last dose. And now there may have been one effect I didn’t fully appreciate until after stopping. While taking semaglutide, I felt more level-headed.
Sure, there were the downsides; being extremely sick was part of it. But I was also losing hair. Hopefully it begins to grow back soon.
What a New Study Says About Semaglutide and Bipolar Disorder
Researchers from Griffith University recently examined GLP-1 medication use among people with bipolar disorder. They analyzed nationwide Swedish data involving nearly 15,000 people over 15 years. The results were particularly interesting when researchers looked specifically at semaglutide.
Semaglutide use was associated with a 21% lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization among people with bipolar disorder. That doesn’t prove the medication directly improves bipolar symptoms. However, the association gives researchers an important reason to investigate the connection further.
The size and length of the research also make the findings worth examining more closely. Researchers had access to nationwide health information covering thousands of patients and more than a decade of treatment. This allowed them to compare psychiatric outcomes during different periods of GLP-1 medication use. Rather than relying on a small group of patients, researchers could examine patterns across a much larger population.
For me, the findings also make my own experience harder to ignore. I wasn’t taking semaglutide to treat my bipolar disorder. Yet, looking back, I remember feeling noticeably more level-headed while using it.
I Think I Felt More Level-Headed While Taking Semaglutide
Living with Bipolar disorder is basically a full-time job. That’s why, looking back, a period of better mental stability stands out to me. It’s not that I noticed those changes from Ozempic while I was taking it, though. I’ve been working with my psychiatrist through a lot of things and trying different medications. So at the time, I didn’t immediately connect that feeling with semaglutide.
I was taking the medication for diabetes management, unrelated to bipolar treatment. It wasn’t until I was pointed in the direction of this study that it made sense to me.
Now it’s important to note that I don’t believe semaglutide magically eliminated every mental health struggle I experienced. Just that I acknowledge that it may have been something that contributed to the positive changes that happened after I started taking it.
Unfortunately, Semaglutide Made Me Very Sick
The Study
Researchers examined Swedish health data from nearly 15,000 people with bipolar disorder who received GLP-1 medications. They compared periods when participants used these medications with periods when they weren’t using them.
Semaglutide stood out from the other medications researchers examined. Its use was associated with a 21% lower risk of psychiatric hospitalization. Researchers believe the finding could point toward benefits beyond diabetes management and weight loss.
The results are especially interesting because researchers didn’t simply examine whether patients reported feeling better. They looked at psychiatric hospitalization, which provides a measurable outcome researchers can track across large health databases. A lower hospitalization risk could potentially point toward greater stability. However, the study cannot establish that semaglutide itself caused that difference.
However, more research is needed before semaglutide could ever be considered a treatment for bipolar disorder. Researchers want randomized controlled trials to investigate whether the medication directly influences psychiatric outcomes. These trials could help separate semaglutide’s effects from other factors that may have influenced the observational results.
Why Could Semaglutide Affect Bipolar Disorder?
Researchers don’t yet know exactly why semaglutide showed this association. One possibility involves inflammation and other biological processes that can affect the brain. GLP-1 signaling may influence inflammation, cellular stress, and other processes associated with bipolar disorder. These effects could potentially contribute to improved mood stability and a lower risk of relapse.
Researchers are interested in these mechanisms because GLP-1 receptors and related biological pathways may have effects beyond metabolism. Understanding those processes could help explain why semaglutide showed an association with psychiatric hospitalization. It could also help researchers determine whether the results reflect a direct neurological effect or other health improvements.
Interestingly, researchers didn’t find the same results with every GLP-1 medication. Liraglutide and Dulaglutide weren’t associated with the same reduction in psychiatric hospitalization. That suggests any potential mental health benefits may not apply to the entire GLP-1 drug class.
That difference also gives researchers another question to investigate. If semaglutide produces an effect that other GLP-1 medications don’t, researchers will need to understand why. The answer could provide clues about which biological pathways may be involved.
Semaglutide Is Not a Bipolar Disorder Treatment
It’s important to understand what this research actually means. Semaglutide is not currently an approved treatment for bipolar disorder. The study also doesn’t prove Ozempic or Wegovy will improve someone’s mental health. An association between semaglutide and fewer psychiatric hospitalizations doesn’t necessarily mean the medication caused that reduction. Other factors could influence the results. That’s one reason researchers want controlled clinical trials to investigate the connection.
A randomized controlled trial could provide much stronger evidence than observational health data alone. Researchers could directly compare outcomes and more carefully account for other variables. Until those studies happen, the findings provide an interesting research direction rather than evidence for using semaglutide as psychiatric treatment.
People also shouldn’t start, stop, or change their medications based solely on these findings. Medication decisions should involve qualified healthcare professionals who understand someone’s individual health and treatment needs.
This Research Makes Me Look at My Experience Differently
Reading about this study was strange for me because my experience with semaglutide was so complicated. Physically, the medication made me sick enough that I couldn’t continue taking it. Mentally, however, I remember feeling more level-headed while I was using it.
Now that I’m off semaglutide, I’ve been struggling more with my mental health. I can’t seem to focus, and I’m crying all the time. I can’t say the medication was responsible for either experience. Bipolar symptoms can change for many reasons, and everyone’s experience with medication is different.
Still, seeing researchers identify a possible connection makes me wonder what future studies could uncover. I especially wonder whether scientists could eventually understand why semaglutide might influence mood stability.
For someone like me, that possibility is particularly interesting. I couldn’t continue semaglutide because of how physically sick it made me. Yet I can’t ignore how different I remember feeling mentally while taking it.
For now, these findings offer an interesting new direction for bipolar disorder research. They also put scientific attention on something I personally noticed before knowing researchers were studying it.
