Most people pick a Datejust backwards. They see a green sunburst dial, fall for it, then find out the case is 41mm and their wrist is not. Now the watch sits in a drawer.
Decide in this order instead: size, metal, bracelet, dial. Dial last. It is the thing you think you care about most and the thing you will notice least once the watch is on your arm.
The Datejust makes this harder than any other Rolex line, and the reason is choice. It is the widest line the brand ever built. Cases run from 26mm to 41mm. Metals run from plain steel to platinum. Case size is the number that decides everything

Solid gold, yellow or Everose, is a commitment. Heavier, catches every light, and it turns the watch into the main thing you are wearing. Fine if that is the plan.
White gold and platinum are the quiet flex. From two metres away they look like steel. That is the entire point, and if you have to explain it, the joke has died.

Black is what people buy when they want a Datejust to feel sportier. Green and blue are the fashion picks. Buy those with your eyes open. You will love it for a year, then find out whether you still do.
Once you have your four answers you are hunting one specific combination, and that is when a deep catalogue earns its keep.
