However, the filmmaker has said they plan to change some things up. Namely, making Chucky scary again. Mancini first took over directing the Chucky franchise with the undeniably campy Seed of Chucky. His follow-ups, Curse of Chucky and Cult of Chucky, took a darker tone. Before the 3-season TV series pushed everything back to camp.
Bloody Disgusting reports that he wants to throw the newest theatrical entry back to the darker tone of Curse of Chucky or the first two films in the franchise, directed by Tom Holland and John Lafia, respectively.
This upcoming film will be the first theatrical entry into the franchise in 22 years, since Curse and Cult were direct-to-video releases. This will be the 9th film, counting the remake that takes place in its own universe. So, the newest entry will follow the continuity from the show and previous Mancini-directed films.
