After nearly four decades, Spaceballs is getting a sequel. Spaceballs 2 brings back Mel Brooks, Rick Moranis, and Bill Pullman alongside franchise newcomer Josh Gad, who also co-wrote the screenplay.
It’s set to hit theaters on April 23, 2027, through Amazon MGM Studios.
Gad was actually the one who pitched the whole thing to Brooks. He recounted the experience on Kelly Ripa‘s Let’s Talk Off Camera podcast, explaining that Brooks told him upfront, “I’m just telling you now, I want you to really go into detail because I don’t know a lot about the new Star Wars films.” Gad then spent 40 minutes walking the comedy legend through modern Star Wars lore before Brooks gave his approval.
And he didn’t just approve it. Brooks signed on as producer and is reprising his dual roles as Yogurt and President Skroob. Pullman returns as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga is back as Queen Vespa, and George Wyner will once again play Colonel Sandurz.
The big headline, though, might be Moranis. This marks his first live-action role in roughly 30 years. Moranis famously stepped away from Hollywood after his wife’s passing to focus on raising his kids. So, his coming back to reprise Dark Helmet is significant.
Rounding out the new cast, Keke Palmer joins as a new character named Destiny, Lewis Pullman plays Starburst (the son of Lone Starr and Vespa, which tracks since Lewis is Bill Pullman’s actual son), and Anthony Carrigan. Josh Greenbaum directs, with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez co-writing alongside Gad.
Filming wrapped in December 2025 in Sydney, Australia. Lewis Pullman called the experience “a dream come true” in an interview with People, adding, “Every day was such a trip. It felt like a bizarre simulation. I just couldn’t believe my luck.”
Like the original, the sequel will primarily parody Star Wars while taking aim at other corners of pop culture. The Schwartz awakens next year on April 23rd.
