Martial Arts Classic, Bloodsport, Getting Reboot at A24

Kumite, Kumite, Kumite, Kumite! This chant of the Japanese word for “grappling hands” is no stranger to anyone who has watched the film Bloodsport. The film has a wild history and brought actor Jean-Claude Van Damme into the mainstream. It’s the kind of film that could only have come out when it did in the late 80s. It is a bombastic mess of cliches, over-the-top acting, fight choreography, and gloriously ’80s music. It’s also getting a reboot.

    What is Bloodsport?

Is Bloodsport the kind of film that needs a remake? No, it really doesn’t. At least, not in the traditional way. This is the kind of film that could have been serious if it wanted to be. Clearly, it did not take that approach, but there’s a reason for that. The premise of the film is based on the real-life version of its protagonist, Frank Dux. Dux claimed that he participated in an underground karate tournament known as the “Kumite,” the basis for this film. Dux also made claims about being trained by a ninja master, working for the CIA, and winning the Medal of Honor. Needless to say, some of these claims are dubious.

That brings us back to Bloodsport. One of the reasons why the movie is so ridiculous is that it’s potentially based on a ridiculous story. Potentially! Could it have happened? Sure, we have to give the benefit of the doubt, we suppose. But that’s where a reimagining of the film could work. This is a concept that, taken seriously, could make for a compelling story. Also, with the increase in popularity of Mixed Martial Arts, it’s taking shape at a good time for martial arts in general.

    Behind the Upcoming Reimagining

More surprising is who’s going to be writing and directing the film, Michaela Coel. Coel is largely known for her series, I May Destroy You. She’s very much engaged with the concept of fighting, though. “I have long been in awe of fighters, and astounded by the discipline, intensity, and isolation the sport demands of them.” She stated. This could lead to a legitimately compelling film, especially with A24 behind it as the production company.

What would happen if someone made Bloodsport except not cheesy? That’s the question that will be answered as Coel’s project moves forward. We’ll continue to update you as we learn more. In the meantime, here’s the great Stan Bush with “Fight to Survive” from the film.
