Protecting the Extremities: Choosing Winter Accessories Kids Will Actually Wear

You can buy the most technically advanced winter coat on the market—featuring 10,000mm waterproofing, taped seams, and high-performance insulation—but if your child’s hands are freezing and their ears are exposed, the outdoor adventure is over in ten minutes. Kids lose a significant amount of heat through their extremities, making hats and gloves just as critical to their overall warmth as the main winter gear.

The primary challenge for parents isn’t finding accessories; it is finding accessories that kids won’t immediately try to pull off. The best mittens and beanies are the ones that go on easily and are so comfortable that kids forget they are wearing them.

Glove and Mitten Solutions for Active Hands

Choosing between gloves and mittens is a common dilemma. For younger children (under 5 years), mittens are generally warmer. Because the fingers share a common insulated pocket, they retain heat more efficiently. For older, more active kids who need increased dexterity for climbing or holding ski poles, gloves are the logical choice.

When selecting gloves or mittens, prioritize these features:

    • Extra-Long Cuffs: This is crucial. Cuffs must extend well past the wrist. Extended cuffs should slide easily under the sleeves of Reima jackets, creating a perfect seal against wind and snow. This prevents the “gap of cold” at the wrist.
    • Waterproofing: Mittens must be waterproof, not just water-resistant. Snowball fights are the ultimate test of any Reima mitten’s construction.
    • Easy Closures: Smooth zippers on the cuffs, as found on some Reima toddlers’ mittens, can make dressing independent-minded children much easier.

Hats and Neck Coverings: Comfort is King

When it comes to hats, the #1 complaint from children is that they are “itchy.” Avoid low-quality acrylic beanies that irritate the forehead. Choose hats with internal fleece or cotton linings, or select merino wool, which is soft, warm, and naturally non-irritating.

    • The Balaclava Advantage: For very windy or cold days, a balaclava (or “monkey hat”) that covers the neck and face is a fantastic solution. They ensure no wind reaches the sensitive skin around the ears and neck. Reima offers balaclavas made from functional wool blends that are thin enough to be worn comfortably under a helmet.
    • Beanies with Windproof Earpieces: Many Reima beanies feature integrated windproof material over the ears, providing targeted protection where it is needed most.

Completing the Setup for Worry-Free Play

Investing in high-quality accessories is an investment in quality time outside. Focus on comfort, waterproofing, and integration with your main Reima jackets. When their hands are dry, their necks are toasty, and their heads are warm, your children can stay focused on the joy of winter exploration, and you can relax and enjoy the season alongside them.
