Vampire Bats Form Social Circles, Sound Like Each Other

It has not been an easy start to 2026. We’ve already had upheavals in the socio-political world, bad movies, and untimely celebrity passings. And while we can’t ignore the sad and the unfortunate when they happen, we do want to try to boost your spirits too with things that are fun, cute, and educational. That’s why we bring you, BATS! Yes, the flying rodents that some people are absolutely terrified of but are actually adorable little furry faces who eat mosquitos. Maybe you don’t think they’re adorable (you’re wrong), but the science of bats is amazing and we’re continuing to learn new things. For example, did you know vampire bats will start to sound like each other when they form social circles?

In nature, there’s a phenomenon called “vocal convergence.” We see this in humans all the time. When people live together and interact frequently, they start to pick up on words, phrases, pronunciations, and intonations. This happens with animals as well including dolphins and elephants. It’s been found to happen with bats too with further evidence showing it extends to vampire bats. Much of this has been discovered thanks to research by behavioral ecologist Gerald G. Carter.

Bat language is fairly sophisticated in the animal world with a combination of screeches, clicks, and other sounds used to communicate with each other in addition to their echolocation abilities. Vampire bats also can be quite social and have dynamic relationships with family members in addition to non-family members that they encounter. It can start with a simple act of seeing if a bat is receptive to being groomed by another. From there, it may even extend to the sharing of food. Bats hunt every night but not every bat is successful. In situations where a bat is malnourished a close friend or relative may regurgitate blood for them to share.

This act is only really seen when bats are very close to each other. It’s also in bats that share that behavior where their vocal patterns start to sound similar. Because bats of the same bloodline (no pun intended) tend to live together, it was thought that the vocal similarities were just because of genetics. That’s where the analysis of individual recordings and behavioral study showed it was more than just that; when bats start to like each other, vocal convergence can happen.

Maybe this information won’t rattle your life in a meaningful way but the idea of cute little bat buddies learning from each other and starting to sound alike is adorable. It’s the kind of coziness we need in the world right now and we’re glad we can share it with you. Bats need more love and maybe understanding how amazingly complex they are will help lead to that.
