Last year, Zach Cregger wrote and directed the Oscar-winning horror film Weapons. So it came as no surprise when a follow-up prequel film was announced in April. Reportedly centering on Aunt Gladys’ (Amy Madigan) origin story. During a San Diego Comic-Con panel, Cregger teased a few things about the upcoming film.
“First of all, I’m really excited about the Gladys movie, and I loved working with Amy,” Cregger said during Collider’s Directors on Directing panel. “I loved that character. For the movie Weapons, it really made a lot of sense not to dive into her backstory because the device of Weapons was to keep her very mysterious.”

Aunt Gladys was by far the fan favorite character of the film. The role even earned Madigan an Oscar for best supporting actress. So again, it’s not a shock this project is being made, but like its predecessor, the plot is being kept under wraps for now.
“However, there’s an amazing story to be told about where Gladys comes from and how she became what we know her as. It’s got a lot of twists and turns and mysteries and crazy things, like Weapons does. I think it’s going to be great,” Cregger adds. “The script is in progress now, but we’re taking that super seriously, and it’s moving in the right direction. So yeah, it’s being written, is the short answer.”
Weapons tells the story of a town where all but one child from the same classroom goes missing at the same time. Lone student, Alex (Cary Christopher), deals with the fallout while supposedly in the care of his mysterious Aunt Gladys. Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, Austin Abrams, and Benedict Wong also star.
