The mythical Snyder Cut of Justice League has been talked about since the movie came out. Director Zack Snyder sadly had to leave the project before it was finished following his daughter’s death by suicide. Joss Whedon stepped in to finish the movie, although with script changes and reshoots. Snyder fans have clamored for the release of a cut that would be truer to Snyder’s original vision, but some claim that no such thing exists, or would be lacking in vital material. While Snyder confirmed the existence of a cut saying, “all I can say is… sure there’s a cut… it’s done. I have a cut. I have a bunch of them. So, it’s not like… that’s up to them [Warner Bros.]” it is possible that even that cut would not show his true vision for the film due to a lack of material (although ScreenRant was of the opinion that principal photography had been completed before Snyder left the project). Either way, there is some sort of Director’s Cut, and it is up to Warner Bros. to allow its release.
To try and bring that about, Snyder Cut fans have embarked on their latest attempt to raise awareness by starting a GoFundMe campaign that is centered around the upcoming 2019 San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC). The money would sponsor some of the following publicity activities:
- A 2-hour flight of a “WB #ReleaseTheSnyderCut OF JUSTICE LEAGUE” airborne banner, from noon to 2 PM, on the day before Warner Brothers presents at Hall H of the convention
- A billboard as close to Comic-Con as possible
- An ad for #ReleaseTheSnyderCut in the July 19 SDCC special issue of The Hollywood Reporter (half page full-color ad)
- Ads on bus stops in key spots in San Diego, on routes to the convention center
Project Comic-Con SDCC19 – ReleaseTheSnyderCut raised $17, 045 in 29 days exceeding its $17,020 goal. Will the attention sway the folks at Warner Bros.? Who can say.
But whether the Snyder Fans get their Director’s Cut or not, the latest campaign will still be a winner because the group also seeks to raise awareness of suicide prevention. So half of the funds raised in the campaign will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). And if the fans’ dreams come true and Warner Bros. announces the release of a Snyder Cut before SDCC, they have pledged to donate all of the money from Project Comic-Con to the AFSP.
