Leveling Up in Adulthood: The Admin Side Nobody Warned Us About

When we were younger, all we could think about was buying alcohol without a fake ID, graduating from school, and moving out of our folks’ home.

And then came the realization that adulting isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Rent. Taxes. Bills. Working 9-5. These were supposed to be the best years. Instead, you’re having to make life-altering decisions when you can’t even decide what’s for dinner.

Does it get easier? Um… no. But it does become manageable if you apply what pop culture refers to as “life hacks”.

    The Inbox From Hell

Remember when getting mail was exciting? Birthday cards. College acceptance letters. That time, Pizza Hut sent you a free coupon.

Now? It’s nothing but spam, work reminders, and 147 “urgent” newsletters you forgot to unsubscribe from.

Managing your inbox is a full-time job. People are literally writing life admin productivity guides so that we can pretend we’re in control. Spoiler: we’re not.

    Reddit to the Rescue

When things spiral, where do you turn? Therapy? Religion? No, you go to Reddit.

Specifically, the “adulting hacks” threads. In fact, some posts are a cry for help: “How do I adult without collapsing in a heap of unopened bills?”

The answers range from “use a planner” to “accept chaos.” Relatable.

Health Insurance: The Hidden Boss Battle

Nothing makes you feel less like a functioning adult than trying to understand a deductible. Or worse, realizing that your health plan is not what you expected it to be.

God forbid you change health insurance plans mid-year. Guess what? You’re not stuck. You can switch if you’ve got a “qualifying life event.” Marriage. Baby. New job. Or, as we like to call it: “plot twists nobody added to the script.”

LIFE143 explains that the Special Enrollment Period is like a VIP pass during a dramatic life-changing event. Consult your insurance company to see if you qualify.

Meal Prep: The Grind That Never Ends

Have you ever noticed how being an adult means you have to feed yourself every day? As in three times? It’s ridiculous.

Your fridge isn’t magical. No parent is refilling it. Just a sad cucumber and expired hummus.

The pros at Food & Wine say meal prep tools are the secret weapon. Firstly, stock up on meal-prep containers. Invest in airtight glass containers that stack neatly in the fridge or freezer.

And then there’s Poosh’s “life hacks” list, which suggests batch cooking and freezing meals.

    Cars: The Other Money Pit

Owning a car was supposed to mean freedom. Road trips! Midnight snack runs! No one cautioned us that windshield wiper fluid could bankrupt you.

The Sun warns that using the wrong fluid could cost you thousands. Thousands! That’s not a car, that’s a high-maintenance vampire. So here’s what you do: checking and changing your vehicle’s fluids is the best preparation ahead of fall and winter.

And don’t even think about TikTok hacks. News.com.au reports that people ruin their cars by trying out random internet shortcuts.

Imagine explaining that to your mechanic: “Yeah, I poured Coke in the radiator because some guy named ‘CarKing420’ told me to.”

    Taxes

Then there’s taxes. Oh, sweet child, you thought taxes were a once-a-year thing?

Wrong. They haunt you like a boss you can’t beat. And unless you’ve got an accountant friend who owes you a favor, you’re on your own.

Investopedia calls tax hacks “the smart way to save.” Translation: we’re all just Googling “can I deduct my cat as a dependent?”

Jokes aside, Investopedia has a few tips worth looking at. For instance, contributing to a health savings account can lower your tax bill. The catch is that you must have a high-deductible health plan to open a health savings account.

    Adulting 101

Here’s the good news: people have compiled survival guides.

Coffee With Keri created an “Adulting 101” list so we can stop Googling at 2 a.m. when the toilet starts making noises. She covers everything from budgeting to cooking without setting off the smoke alarm. It’s basically Cliff Notes for grown-ups.

The punchline is that nobody warned us adulthood was 80% admin and 20% actual fun. Life is forms, fluids, and frozen chili. The trick? Don’t panic. Use the hacks.

Switch your health insurance coverage when you can. Ignore TikTok mechanics. Buy the meal prep containers. And for the love of all that is holy, unsubscribe from at least three newsletters tonight.

Welcome to our TED Talk. Tips are welcome, and please subscribe to our newsletter. Just joking!
