Dorothy Will Only be Seen from a Distance in “Wicked: For Good”

The cultural phenomenon “Wicked: For Good” is set to hit theaters next month. Since the films take place in the “Wizard of Oz” universe, there’s a lot of buzz about who’s playing Dorothy. We still don’t have a concrete answer for that, but we do know that the iconic character will only be seen from afar.

Though we did get a brief glimpse of her in Jon M. Chu’s first film adaptation.

This film, based on the musical based on the best-selling novel by Gregory Maguire, is chronologically closer to “The Wizard of Oz.” Making Dorothy an unavoidable character, but it seems like she will only be seen from a great distance or from behind.

“I think that’s such a wonderful thing to do,” Cynthia Erivo told Empire about the idea. “because then everyone gets to keep the Dorothy that they know.”

An interesting concept considering some have formed their ideas about Dorothy from the books, some from the stage, and others from the original films. (Yes, we are counting “The Wiz.”) Keeping her in silhouette would allow audiences to form/keep their own visions of her.

Either way, Dorthy’s entering the universe is a major shake-up for Elphaba (Erivo) and Glinda (Ariana Grande). And it turns out that the good witch can be a bit of a troll since she doesn’t give Dorothy a direct route to The Wizard. Instead, telling her to follow the winding yellow brick road.

“I love the little bit of shadiness that Glinda has towards Dorothy,” Grande explains. “There’s a lot going on, and she doesn’t really have time to deal with this. She could have told her to take the Emerald City train! But she didn’t. That’s a little shady, Glinda! So I leaned all the way into Glinda sort of having an eye roll for Dorothy whenever she has to deal with her.”

“Wicked: For Good” hits theaters on November 21st.
