Jerry Bruckheimer Developing “Crimson Tide” Sequel

In 1995, “Crimson Tide” hit theaters and was an instant hit with viewers and critics. 30 years later, producer Jerry Bruckheimer says a sequel is in development. He is also teasing the possibility of Denzel Washington reprising his role.

In a recent interview with “The Rich Eisen Show,” Bruckheimer revealed that the project already has an unnamed writer and director.

“We have a really good director and writer talking to the navy right now about what’s going on under the water,” he vaguely explained.

“Crimson Tide” centers around a young First Officer (Washington), on a U.S. nuclear missile sub, who stages a mutiny to stop his trigger-happy Captain (Gene Hackman). The crew must prevent him from launching missiles before confirming his orders to do so.

“If we give him a good script, I think he’d do it,” Bruckheimer said about Washington reprising his role. Washington’s camp has confirmed that, given the right script, the Oscar winner would return. But at this time, no script has been finalized for a “Crimson Tide” sequel.

Sadly, Hackman passed away in February at the age of 95. There is no word on whether they will recast his role or give Washington’s character a brand-new adversary.

“The original film was directed by the late Tony Scott, and Robert Towne is among the writers. “We had Tony Scott, a phenomenal director,” says Bruckheimer. “We had Quentin Tarantino and Robert Towne, two of the greatest writers and directors, writing on that movie. … I don’t know if I’ll ever replicate that kind of writing for a film.”

We’ll keep you posted on updates about a “Crimson Tide” sequel as the project develops. The original film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime. You can watch the full interview with Bruckheimer below:
