“Phantom of the Opera” Returns as Immersive Experience “Masquerade”

When it comes to modern plays and playwrights, there are few more well known than “The Phantom of the Opera” and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber. Lloyd Webber’s 1986 musical hit Broadway in 1988 and didn’t stop until 2023. That’s one hell of a long run for anything let alone a musical. While it’s departure from Broadway was a major blow, the musical will now live on in a new immersive experience called “Masquerade.”

You can tell something is going to be a special event when they outline a very specific dress code for it. The details for “Masquerade” are intentionally cloaked in mystery with the press release itself made to be as if the Phantom himself is inviting people to his coming attraction. “You are strongly advised to sign my ledger by the 30th of June. This will ensure you will be granted access to my production during the six weeks I have elected to present it to a very fortunate few.” The ledger is a website for the show with a place to put your name and email address; because the Phantom got with the times and has an online presence, naturally.

As for the dress code, it reads as follows: “You must dress in black, white or silver or a combination of these colours; You must at all times conceal your face. A masquerade mask in black, white, or silver is required. Bring your own or purchase one at the door; Finally, a word of advice. Do not wear high heels. Whilst in certain circumstances these can be appropriate, they could be treacherous as you tread the secret catacombs and dark crannies that I have prepared for you.”

Adding to the mystery, we don’t know when this six-week run is going to be or how many performances it will have. As the original note mentions as well, the ledger is just a chance to have access for “a very fortunate few,” so good luck being able to get the opportunity to get in.

You can enter your information on the production’s official website for a chance to get tickets.
