Alex Garland to Direct “Elden Ring” Live-Action Film for A24

    “Arise, now ye tarnished.”

These words have echoed in the minds of many a gamer since they were spoken at the start of 2022’s “Elden Ring.” The open-world, action RPG has become one of gaming’s biggest successes as it married the challenging gameplay that FromSoftware had become known for, with the storytelling of George. R.R. Martin. It is widely considered to rank amongst the greatest games of all time, and it looks like it’s coming to the big screen with Alex Garland at the helm.

    Alex Garland, “Annihilation”

Last summer, GRRM teased a possible “Elden Ring” film. “Oh, and about those rumors you may have heard about a feature film or television series based on ELDEN RING… I have nothing to say,” he wrote on his NotABlog.  “Not a word, nope, not a thing, I know nothing, you never heard a peep from me, mum mum mum. What rumor?”

Well, his next book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series may never happen, but an “Elden Ring” movie will, courtesy of A24.

Garland wrote the original “28 Days Later,” as well as the upcoming “28 Years Later.” Earlier this year he released “Warfare” and the year prior he put out “Civil War,” both of which he wrote and directed. All this is in addition to his 2014 directorial break out, “Ex Machina,” and should we mention as well that he also worked on the story for the 2013 video game, “DmC: Devil May Cry?” We can add the writing and directing of the upcoming “Elden Ring” film to that resume.

As of right now, there’s not much information about the project. Aside from Garland’s involvement, we know GRRM is attached as a producer. There’s no word if FromSoftware president and game director Hidetaka Miyazaki (“Elden Ring,” “Dark Souls,” “Bloodborne”). Garland will have his work cut out for him to try and pare down and explain the epic fantasy world of “Elden Ring” for a mass audience. It is easily one of the more ambitious projects in video game film adaptations and we’ll continue to report as we learn more.
