Make a Garden of Eden Snake Pretzels for Easter

Easter is a time for fun, colors, and delicious treats. Many people love making themed snacks that add excitement to the holiday. One popular choice? Snake pretzels! Breakfast time at Easter often gets overlooked for the more exciting dinner where everyone gathers around at the table. For kids, they often won’t eat until they’re served. Unfortunately that means it’s all falling on Mom and Dad who are probably already frantically preparing for the main course and company. Fortunately though; I thought I’d make up some really easy pretzels which kind of fit the Easter theming. Satan Snakes! They look great next to deviled eggs too.

The symbolism of snakes and Easter

Snakes have different meanings across cultures. In many stories, they represent renewal, rebirth, and new beginnings. They are often linked to springtime, when nature begins to wake up. Making a snake shape with pretzels ties into these themes of rebirth and growth during Easter. It adds a layer of fun and cultural significance to your snack table. OR it can represent the Garden of Eden and what threw humanity into a spiral there forth. I choose the latter because I’m not that religious to begin with.

How to Make Snake Pretzels for Easter

    Essential ingredients and tools

To create snake pretzels, you’ll need a few simple ingredients:

    • 3 Teaspoons instant dry yeast (Walmart has a 3 pack, I used on and a quarter)
    • 1 1/2 cups warm water (about 105 degrees F)
    • 2 tablespoons granulated white sugar
    • 4 cups flour
    • 1 egg
    • 1 teaspoon salt
    • 1/3rd stick of butter
    • Blue or Green food coloring (I’d probably choose green, I went with blue because I figured the egg would make it green after mixing, and my snakes were still pretty blue.

Step-by-step instructions for making snake-shaped pretzels

    1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
    2. Mix dry ingredients (Sugar, Salt, Flour) in a bowl.
    3. Warm water on stove in a pot, do not bring to boiling just warm it up.
    4. Mix the yeast and warm water in a bowl and make sure yeast is well dissolved.
    5. Mix water, yeast and dry ingredients together mixing and kneading by hand until the dough is in a nice shape. Smooth and round.
    6. Spray a separate bowl with nonstick cooking spray and set dough inside, cover with shrink wrap and set in warm place (I put mine on top of the oven)
    7. Cut dough into about 8 separate pieces and roll them out into a long snake, about 8″-12″ long. Set snakes and shape them on baking pan covered with parchment paper.
    8. Wash with Egg, Butter, and food coloring. Then sprinkle kosher salt on top.
    9. Bake for 15 minutes (or less). Avoid overbaking to keep pretzels soft and chewy.

    Creative variations and decorations

Make your snake pretzels stand out with fun decorations:

    • Use colorful food coloring or edible markers to add details. I just brushed mine with the egg and butter mixture and added some frosting and eyes after.
    • Combine sweet and savory flavors, like cinnamon sugar for a more churro flavoring

Tips for Perfecting and Presenting Snake Pretzels

You just have to try and fail a few times to get the hang of it. I was going to write about this earlier but honestly it took me a few times to perfect what I wanted to do.
