Rachel Brosnahan Shares her “Superman” Casting Story

James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman” film is by far one of the most anticipated titles of the year. Rachel Brosnahan (“Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”) landed the coveted role of Pulitzer Prize winning journalist, Lois Lane. In a recent interview, she opened up about finding out she had been cast in the iconic role of Clark Kent/Superman’s main squeeze.

“I was in a bathroom at Aritzia in SoHo,” she told Good Housekeeping. “My phone rang, and it said ‘James Gunn.’ I don’t know why he’s listed, but he’s listed. And I was praying that the toilet didn’t flush behind me, but I didn’t want to miss the call. Somewhere in my brain I felt like if I missed the call that I wouldn’t get the job. So I picked up the phone and he just said, ‘How’d you like to be the next Lois Lane?’ I was very excited and then immediately nervous. I had big shoes to fill.”

    Brosnahan Becoming Lois Lane

Gunn insists on making everyone audition, and Brosnahan made her tape with husband and fellow actor Jason Ralph (“I’m Thinking of Ending Things”) in their living room. “He’s really confused about why he’s not playing Superman after his excellent off camera reading,” Brosnahan jokes.

This audition led to chemistry readings with other prospective actors in Los Angeles. After fine tuning, “somehow David [Corenswet] and I had the chemistry,” she explains. “Even from the tests that we all did out in Los Angeles, it was clear that this was a really special team of people who just love this project, love comic books — and that’s who you want behind these iconic characters and properties.”

While Brosnahan can’t spill the beans about “Superman” itself, she thinks that “there’s something in it for everyone.”  She calls it “the hopeful Superman,” stressing “it’s hopeful without being overly earnest and saccharine.”

“I’m excited to be putting something hopeful out into the world in the middle of these pretty tricky and tumultuous times,” she says. “It’s hopeful, but it’s also entertaining. It has all the things you expect and want from a big superhero movie and then also a lot of heart too.”

“Superman” hits theaters on July 11th, 2025. You can check out the trailer below:
