Bill Farmer, Jason Marsden Reunite for “A Goofy Movie” 30th Anniversary

When a company has a catalog of films as large as Disney has, there are always going to be films that some will decry as “hidden gems” or “cult classics.” Opinions will vary on the subject but one that pops up fairly consistently is “A Goofy Movie.” Released in 1995, the film didn’t do big numbers at the box office, nor did it endear itself to critics. The opinion on the film has changed drastically over time though with the film gaining an audience that has found the film’s sincere heart about Goofy wanting to bond with his Max. It’s been 30 years now since that film came out and the voices of the animated father and son got together to reminisce a bit.

In “A Goofy Movie” the titular character is played by long time Goofy voice actor, Bill Farmer. Max is played by now long-time voice actor, Jason Marsden. At the time of the movie’s release, Marsden was 19 and not too far removed from the age of Max. The same could be said of Farmer and Goofy, with Bill being 43. The two actors have worked together over the years but they got together for a short that was released on Disney’s YouTube channel. “On the Road Again: A Goofy Movie 30th Anniversary with Bill Farmer and Jason Marsden,” is only about seven minutes long, but it’s a heartwarmingly good time.

As the two enter a prop car designed to look like the one Goofy and Max take a road trip in, the two actors discuss a bit about the history of Goofy, his voice, and the impact of “A Goofy Movie.” We don’t want to say too much because you really should let the magic speak for itself, but there are some wonderful moments between the two. The subject of Goofy’s famous laugh is brought up and how because of how symbolic it is, how it defined Max’s fears of being like his dad. You also get to hear how Farmer breaks the laugh down as to how to perform it.

There’s also a stellar moment where we get to hear the two discuss their favorite songs from the film. This is one of those moments we don’t want to spoil because of how beautifully endearing it is. Farmer and Marsden also echo a lot of the sentiments that audiences have built up towards the film. “A Goofy Movie” is one of those things that you view completely differently as a child and as an adult. They’re keenly aware that people go from sympathizing with Max’s plight about being stuck with his dad, to feeling sad for Goofy that his son doesn’t want to spend time with him.
