“The Legend of Zelda” Live-Action Film Gets Release Date

When Nintendo scored big with “The Super Mario Bros.” movie in 2023, it wasn’t surprising to see them pushing ahead with other franchises into the world of film. And unless The Big N was going to try and pull a fast one on people, what other franchise was more obvious to pursue than The Legend of Zelda. Sure enough, in November of 2023, Nintendo announced they would be teaming with Sony to distribute a live-action Legend of Zelda movie to be directed by Wes Ball. While we still don’t have a lot of details about the project, we did learn one major one: the release date.

We won’t leave you waiting to find out, it’s approximately two years from the time of this writing on March 26th, 2027. Even at the time of the announcement, The Legend of Zelda creator, Shigeru Miyamoto stated that he had been working on this movie for years with producer Avi Arad. Wes Ball is coming off of directing “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” and prior to that, The Maze Runner trilogy of films. It’ll take a good amount of special and practical effects the bring the world of Hyrule to life, especially if it’s going to measure up to fan expectations. Ball did a great job in doing that with his Planet of the Apes, hopefully he can do that here as well.

No other details about the film have been made public at this time. We don’t know who’s writing the script, if there have been any casting decisions made, or if it will tell an original story as opposed to retelling the events of any of the games. It’s not as if there’s a lack of room to work within though as Nintendo has already established that the games aren’t always direct sequels to each other. Many of the titles feature reincarnations of the characters, as the story of Link, Zelda, and their nemesis, Ganon is destined to repeat itself.

It’s also interesting to compare this to a story we recently reported on involving the Street Fighter film adaptation. That’s a project that was announced in 2023, lost its directors in 2024, had a new director announced in February of 2025, and was supposed to hit theaters in early 2026. Yeah, that got removed from the release slate. It’s nice to see that The Legend of Zelda is apparently moving steadily along. And when we do get more info on a script or cast, we’ll let you know.
