David Arquette Returning as Dewey in “Scream 7” Somehow

We have yet another confusing cast announcement about “Scream 7,” from Spyglass and Paramount Pictures. David Arquette will be returning to the slasher franchise as Deputy Dewey Riley. Arquette joins Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard in reprising characters that were thought/proven to be dead in the franchise.

Plot details and specifics about these character’s returns are strictly under wraps at this time. But outside of hallucinations or just full on retconning everyone’s demise, we have no idea how they are going to pull this off.

David Arcquette as Dewey in “Scream”

Arquette will be joining fellow legacy cast members Foley, Lillard, Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox, Mason Gooding, and Jasmin Savoy Brown. Alongside newcomers Isabel May, Celeste O’Connor, Asa Germann, Mckenna Grace, Sam Rechner, Anna Camp, Joel McHale, Mark Consuelos, and Ethan Embry.

    “Scream” Spoilers Below

There are several challenges with having these characters logically return to the franchise. Stu Macher (Lillard) was killed alongside Billy Loomis (Skeet Ulrich) in the first film after they were revealed to be the killers. Ulrich’s character has been brought back via hallucinations from his secret daughter.

Roman Bridger (Foley), secret brother of Sidney Prescott (Campbell), was killed by Dewey (Arquette) in “Scream 3.” And Dewey was done in, in “Scream 5” by Amber Freeman (recent Oscar winner Mikey Madison).

If there is a door open for all these characters to come back then nothing is seemingly off limits. Including reviving Dewy’s younger sister Tatum Riley (Rose McGowan) whose death in the first film drove Dewy to fight as hard as he did for as long as he did in the franchise. (Yeah, yeah we know you see an urn with her name on it, but Dewey had a pretty violent death and is still apparently somehow kicking).

We’ll keep you posted on updates about “Scream 7” as the project develops.
