Who is in the mood for some Edgar Allen Poe? Actress Sydney Sweeney (“Immaculate”) is in talks to star in a new adaptation of “The Masque of the Red Death!” This is thought to be a darkly comedic take on Poe’s classic tale, courtesy of A24 and Picturestart.

Poe’s short story centers around a prince attempting to avoid a plague known as the Red Death. So he initiates lockdown procedures and holds up in his abbey before things begin to go awry. However, specific plot details for this new film adaptation are still under wraps.

Charlie Polinger (“The Plague”) is attached to write, direct, and executive produce along with Lucy McKendrick.

This will be at least the 7th film adaptation of the tale since the 1919 German film “The Plague of Florence” by  Otto Rippert. Since then it has been adapted by the likes of the late Roger Corman and Vincent Prince in 1964, some animated projects, Wendy Pini‘s (“ElfQuest”) graphic novel, and an episode of Mike Flanagan‘s “The Fall of the House of Usher” on Netflix.

We’ll keep you posted on updates about Polinger’s adaptation of “The Masque of the Red Death” as they become available.
