“Hellraiser” Returns to Theaters for 40th Anniversary

It’s hard to deny that there is something almost magical about watching a movie you love up on the big screen. It’s even more magical if it’s a film that was before your time but you finally get the chance to see it brought back to theaters. Maybe you have a local theater that shows original prints sometimes. Maybe you attended the re-release of a major franchises like “Lord of the Rings” or “Star Wars.” Or perhaps you’ve been too busy trying to solve the Lament Configuration to care about films. Well, if you’re in the latter group then do we have such sights to show you!

Released back in 1987, the film “Hellraiser” was based on Clive Barker‘s short story “The Hellbound Heart.” Unlike other film adaptations of horror, this one benefited from having a screenplay written by Barker himself, who also directed. It also introduced the world to the horror icon Pinhead, played by Doug Bradley. And yes, we know, technically he’s ‘Lead Cenobite,’ we know our way around the franchise.

To celebrate the film’s 40th anniversary, Fathom Events is bringing a new 4K print to theaters for two nights only. Additionally, they’ll be showing the documentary “Under the Skin: Doug Bradley on Hellraiser.” Bradley portrayed the character of Pinhead in all of the “Hellraiser” films up to “Hellraiser: Revelations.”

It’s refreshing to see the series getting some renewed attention given its reputation over the years. The last theatrically released film in the franchise was “Hellraiser: Bloodline” in 1996. Since then has been a slew of direct to video releases of dwindling quality until Hulu premiered “Hellrasier” in 2022.

“Hellrasier” returns to theaters February 5th and 6th, 2025. Check Fathom Events’ website to find a time and location near you. It’ll be a punishingly pleasurable good time. If you’d like to pick up your own copy of the newest 4K release, pick it up from Amazon here.
