Kids aren’t always the best at separating fact from fiction, and celebrity kids are no exception. Macaulay Culkin said that his 3-year-old son, Dakota Song Culkin, thinks that HE is Kevin in 1990’s “Home Alone.” Despite the fact that he wasn’t even born yet.
“He thinks he’s Kevin,” Macaulay told E! News. “I’m like, ‘Do you remember going down that down the stairs on the sled?’ He’s like, ‘Mmhmm, yep. Sure do.’ I’m like, ‘Do you remember when he had yellow hair?’ And he’s like, ‘Uh-huh, yep.'”
Once Dakota started to believe he “fought the burglars” himself, Macaulay did have to call him out. “‘You’re a lying liar who lies,'” he joked with Dakota. “That was me!'”
It seems that he has shown both Dakota and his 2-year-old son, whose name Macaulay and fiancée Brenda Song have not revealed to the public, the film with a lot of context. “They can’t really follow the storyline,” he explains, “so I kind of told them the story as it goes.”
Even though his kids don’t realize that dear old dad is the one terrorizing the would-be robbers. “I’m a lot taller now. I have a lot more body hair,” Macaulay jokes. “But yeah, that was actually me.”
His brother Kieran Culkin doesn’t quite share the same philosophy. Admitting that his 5 and 3-year-old children have never seen “Home Alone.” Even though their dad, uncle, and aunt Quinn Culkin all have roles in the film. Kieran is concerned that some scenes in the movie may be too scary for such a young audience. (Or he just doesn’t want to deal with one of his kids also believing they are in the movie).
Embracing “Home Alone”
Like most child actors, Macaulay has a complex relationship with the movie that made him a household name. But it seems that time allowed him to embrace his status as a 90’s pop culture icon.
“I’m kind of embracing it and, at the same time, taking the piss out of it, too,” he shares. “It’s very rare when you have something that kind of encompasses an important day, and I’m a part of that. It’s more fun to embrace it than to fight it.”
“Home Alone”’s status as a beloved Christmas movie has led him to partner with Uber Eats in a way that mocks and embraces the role. The delivery app now offers Uber Carolers in select cities. “We didn’t want to do something that was too on the nose when it came to referencing Home Alone,” Macaulay explains. “It was kind of just like a little wink and nods. I just thought it was kind of nice and simple and fun.”
Because who can say no to on-demand carols? “They paid me in carolers,” the actor laughs. “Yes, I think I have it in my contract that they have to send carolers to my house.”
