Kevin Smith Announces He’s Working on a “Dogma” Sequel

Well, that didn’t take long! Last month, writer/director Kevin Smith wrestled the rights for “Dogma” away from convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein. The 1999 religious, dark comedy had been tied up with the Weinstein’s, leaving the film and its universe in a fairly untouchable place. Smith wanted to do a 25th anniversary tour of the movie, and had plans for continuing the story in various different forms.

    A month later- he’s planning a full-fledged sequel.

Smith spoke openly and candidly about his plans for a sequel. He wants a continuation to happen despite some fans hoping he leaves the film as-is. It would be hard to do a sequel with the same punch considering the deaths of George Carlin and Alan Rickman.

Obviously Smith is aware of this, but his focus is on ensuring Matt Damon and Ben Affleck reappear as Loki and Bartleby, respectively.

“Expect a cameo from them — more than a fucking cameo,” Smith said. “The only way we get a ‘Dogma‘ sequel made is if they’re there. So count on those guys being there.” Will that be enough to make the movie live up to its predecessor? It’s hard to say. If Smith goes through with this it wouldn’t be the first time he’s done a sequel after an extensive gap in time. Audiences had to wait 12 years between “Clerks” and “Clerks II,” and another 8 years after that for “Clerks III.”

Considering how early in development this project is, there’s not much more to report about it at this time. “Dogma” holds a special place in the View Askewniverse, given the religious elements it brings into play. It’s a film that is heavily Catholic and spiritual despite its raunch, bloodshed, and walking s*** monster. It’s kind of wholesome when you really start to think about it.

We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
