Since the 1980s, director Francis Ford Coppola’s dream project has been to make the film “Megalopolis.” For one reason or another, production on the project took much longer than expected. But today we got the first teaser trailer for an absolutely heartbreaking reason.

“Megalopolis” will be a Roman epic set in New York during reconstruction after a disaster that wiped out all the infrastructure. The brief clip shows Cesar (Adam Driver) standing on the ledge of a very tall metal building. It looks like he is about to leap off but instead, he starts and stops time. Each bellow of “Time stop” is proven when he looks down and sees the dense city traffic standstill. Only moving again when he yells “Time start.”

The film will also star Forest Whitaker as the Mayor of New York, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jon Voight, Aubrey Plaza, Laurence Fishburne, and Shia LaBeouf. As well as Coppola’s sister Talia Shire, and nephew Jason Schwartzman.

    Why Today?

In an Instagram post, Coppola shared the reason he picked today to release the teaser footage.

“Megalopolis has always been a film dedicated to my dear wife Eleanor,” Coppola said. “I really had hoped to celebrate her birthday together this May 4th. But sadly that was not to be, so let me share with everyone a gift on her behalf.”

His wife, Eleanor Coppola, who directed the incredible documentary “Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker’s Apocalypse” about Francis’ experiences making “Apocalypse Now,” passed away on April 12th.

“Megalopolis” will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. Check out the teaser trailer below:
